Banana Cupcakes with Dark chocolate frosting. These super soft cupcakes have the best flavor of banana and topped with rich dark chocolate icing. Favorite combo.
I have this little weird thing about bananas and chocolate. I mean it’s such a great combo. My dark chocolate banana smoothie is one of my all time favorite breakfasts. And I love banana chocolate chip muffins. Oh my word!
And now these have entered my small little world. I’m a believer in the banana/chocolate combo! Are you?
By the way I would make these for the icing alone.
Little side note. I found this cute little marble board this week. I absolutely love it! Can’t wait to serve up some bread on it too.
I’m not doing a lot of writing on this post for one reason. I think the pictures speak for themselves. Delicious dessert!
Hope you’re having a wonderful day. Til we meet and eat again!

Banana Cupcakes with Dark Chocolate Frosting
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup softened butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 3 small or 2 medium very ripe bananas smashed
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup yogurt or buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 1/3 cups all purpose flour
Chocolate Frosting:
- 1/2 cup 1 stick butter, softened
- 2/3 cup HERSHEY'S Special Dark Cocoa
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease 2 muffin or cupcake pans or line with paper liners and grease the liners.
- Beat the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl on medium-high speed until well combined. Add the eggs, and beat thoroughly. The mixture may look a bit lumpy; that's OK.
- Add the banana, honey, and yogurt or buttermilk, beating until well combined. The mixture will probably look lumpy. Proceed.
- Add the vanilla extract, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and flour. Mix well.
- Pour into muffin/cupcake pans. Original recipe says it makes 12. Mine would I have overflowed I got 17. But if you want an even number just put slightly less in each and you should have enough for 18.
- Bake for 23-27 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let rest for 5 minutes. Then tilt each cupcake slightly to keep the bottom from steaming. Allow to cool completely.
For Frosting:
- Melt butter. Stir in cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating to smooth consistency. Add small amount additional milk, if needed. Stir in vanilla until smooth. Frost cupcakes.

This is one of those flavor combinations that is just right. Banana’s and chocolate go so well together. I don’t think I’ve ever had a banana cupcake but can totally see how it would be delicious.

I hadn’t until recently but I’m hooked now. 🙂

Wow — I can tell at a glance that I would love these. One of the best things I’ve ever made was a banana cake with Nutella frosting, but this dark chocolate version might give that one a run for its money!

That sounds great too Sue! Thanks for stopping by!

Hi! These look fabulous! I’m actually looking for a healthier version of cake to make for my daughter’s 1st birthday and this looks like a GREAT idea. Have you ever tried to make this in a cake pan? I’m going to be using two 6×2 inch pans! Any input would be appreciated and thanks for this idea!!
Melanie says
I really wish I could give you great advice. But I haven’t tried it any other way than the cupcake form. I wish you well though and would love if you come back and let every know how you make out with this variety. Thanks Ashley!

I love the concept of a banana cupcake. But I cannot wrap my head with combination of sugar and honey. I will try the recipe, but with less sugar. Thank you
Melanie says
See what works for you. I’ve already reduced the sugar a bit from the original recipe. Good luck!
