For those of you following along you may have noticed that I am on a journey. A journey of helping. A journey that takes me out of my home and into the real world with people who are suffering, lonely, needy or discouraged.
My journey is simple. Go out and help, in small simple ways.
This week I volunteered at my son’s school. He’s in kindergarten. God help his teacher. I pray for her daily. 26 little ones all just getting the hang of a classroom setting.
My time there was well spent. These little children are precious. I asked the teacher about the difficulty of teaching kindergarten. She says it definitely has it’s challenges.
But one of the reasons she loves it so much is that she gets to train them in way that works for her and her classroom. They are like little sponges. They just soak it all up. At one point she had them waddle back to their desks like penguins. I couldn’t control my laughter. It was just too cute.
As I watched her in action teaching it made me think. We need to raise up a generation that listens well and follows guidelines. These little eyes and ears need to see good examples. They need nuturing and love.
Some of these children may never know what it means for someone to love them unconditionally.
Some of these children may never know it feels like for someone to teach them diligently.
Some of these children may never see the love, care and attention at home as they do in school.
Don’t underestimate the positive influence you can have in a classroom even as a parent. Go out and give it your best. Some of these kids are crying out for attention. And we would all rather see them get that in positive ways. We want this generation to avoid the pit falls of so many before.
Go out and be a part.

I’ve volunteered in my son’s classroom, as well (and had similar thoughts of “Heaven help her” about his teacher!) I believe that my being there has made a huge difference in my son’s education, and I like to think that it has made a difference in the education of a few of his classmates.
Thank you for sharing your experiences of helping others.
