Teaching Your Child to Pray – Prayers to pray with your kids. These prayer prompts help as we teach our children to pray to God.
I don’t know about you but nothing I do as a parent can be more effective than to teach my children how to love the Lord. To love God through giving, serving, worshiping and one of the most important, prayer.
Prayer is a fundamental aspect of being a Christ follower. It is our communication with our Father. How would I feel if my children never or rarely communicated with me? I would not feel loved or appreciated. Our heavenly Father feels the same way. He wants to know what’s in our heart and on our children’s heart.
Sometimes during prayer time he gets confused and repeats himself. Other times he refuses to pray because he’s too tired. Often his prayers are repetitive.
Now don’t get me wrong, repetitive prayers can be a great way to get started praying with your child. “Now, I lay me down to sleep…” and such. But he’s getting to the age where he just needs some guidance in how to pray. And I have been doing that all along but just recently I helped him to pray with prayer prompts and he absolutely loved it.
I’m definitely not an expert in this area but I just wanted to share what I’ve been doing lately with my 5-year-old. It engages him and focuses on touching all aspects of prayer. About 7 years ago my wonderful mentor taught be the ACTS way to prayer. Have you ever been introduced to it?
Adoration
Confession
Thankfulness
Supplication
I think all of these are very important in your communication with God. I’ve taught this to my 11-year-old as a model for prayer but obviously, my kindergartner is much too young for this example. Yet, I want him to learn that prayer is so much more than just “Help me! and ” Thank you.”
I made up this simple prompt to help him get out of his rut and think differently.
I recorded his responses for the first day. They were completely his own and they melted my heart.
I’m so thankful that you gave me ___a nice house________.
I’m so glad that you helped me with ___making a loom bracelet___ today. (He worked so hard at it!)
I love you, God, because __you’re helpful_____.
Please help me tomorrow as I ___________________. (I forgot what he said to this one).
Please watch over __Celio____ . (One of our sponsor children.)
This list is not a complete list. You can take it and make it your own. I just wanted to share what’s been helping us during prayer time. I hope you are both inspired and encouraged but what pops out of your little one’s mouth during prayer prompts.
Praying that this might be an inspiration for you and your child or grandchild during prayer time. ↓↓

Yes, thanks or sharing. Some of kidlets in my Sunday school class need to have a prompt. Great subjects to focus on and discuss.
