Copycat Archway Dutch Cocoa Cookies – Recipes for homemade chocolate cookies that taste just like Archway. Chewy, soft, rolled in sugar. Perfection!
These cookies are perfection! Anyone else familiar with Archway Dutch Cocoa Cookies? For some reason or another my dad loved them so they made their way into our kitchen quite often growing up. So of course now that I have my own blog I want to recreate all those wonderful childhood memories but without the additives and preservatives.
You know those awesome little peanut butter Tandy cakes by Tastykake? Yes, I was addicted to them too. You may or may not find them on the blog here soon. I refuse to buy them now. So how else is a girl going to get her peanut butter chocolate Tastykake fix? That’s right. I’ve gotta make them myself or do without. And why should I do without? I’m entitled to a treat every now and then!
Especially after these things. I mean I had to take all these photos without eating all the cookies. That’s self control. Oh and it’s also a giving spirit. The kids would not be too happy if they found out mom ate all the cookies that they definitely smelled baking. Oh, they’ve got noses all right. And they sure do smell the goods.
As soon as they walk the through the door I hear. “That smells so good.” There’s no way I could even begin to hide the truth about the cookies I’ve just baked. They’re way too smart for that anymore.
Well, I’m glad too. Because a food blogger definitely needs someone to share the ‘goods’ with. Well, I’ve got plenty of ‘someones’ and that makes me just downright blessed. 🙂
Have a great week! Hope it’s filled with good food and your favorite people around the table.
Til we meet and eat again,

Natalie @ Tastes Lovely says
I love how thin and crispy these are Melanie! I bet these would be awesome to use for ice-cream sandwiches!
Melanie says
Great idea Natalie!
Baby June says
Those are PERFECT. I can almost taste the crispiness and chocolatyness. 🙂 Pinned to my cookies board! 😀

they look great!
Chris @ Shared Appetite says
Wow Melanie these look just like the original!! You have some super awesome copycat skills!
Melanie says
Thanks Chris! 🙂

Delicious looking chocolate sugar cookies! They look just like the Archway cookies! My dad was more of a vanilla guy. Pepperidge Farm sugar cookies were what I grew up with. 🙂 I think the Hersheys Special Dark cocoa is the best for this recipe. You get the extra color and flavor of Dutched cocoa with the acid in the regular cocoa to make the baking soda work. Can’t wait to try. Thanks!
Melanie says
We also grew up with Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies. I love Hershey’s Special Dark cocoa. As I said I buy it by the 6 pack because I use it a lot.
So glad you stopped by and I hope you enjoy the cookies!
Jocelyn says
These are delicious! I baked them up so they are a bit crispy, and my family loves them. Thanks for a terrific recipe.
Melanie says
That’s awesome Jocelyn! Glad you enjoyed them. And thanks so much for the feedback!

Oh my. These cookies look irresistible! I need a batch of these in my life, pronto! Thanks for linking up at SNF – pinned to our group board!
Jessica says
These sounds amazing! Any suggestions if I want them to be chewier rather than crispy?
Can’t wait to try!
Melanie says
Yes, Jessica. Be sure to slightly under bake rather than over bake. Let sit on pan to cool for 2-3 minutes before removing to rack. Store in a tightly sealed container. Good luck. Let me know how they turn out for you! So glad you stopped by!
Jen R. says
These are delicious. I adore that special dark cocoa, who knew? I hope I have some left to take to my friend’s tomorrow night. I better quick bake something else just in case.
Melanie says
I do too Jen! I use it in so many recipes. So glad you enjoyed the cookies.
Tiffany says
These are literally the best cookies I’ve ever made. SO chocolate-y, rich, and just the right texture. Will be a favorite recipe for years to come. I used Hershey’s Special Dark cocoa.
Melanie says
Thanks Tiffany! They are definitely some of my favorite cookies of all time too. I almost exclusively used Hershey’s Special Dark cocoa now for all baking. I just love it!
Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate my readers feedback!
Sarah O. says
I just made these, and they came out perfect! They really do taste 95% identical to the archway ones, which are my faves. I even got lazy and didn’t chill the dough, and they still came out soft and chewy. Great recipe, thanks!
Melanie says
Sarah, I love it. So glad they turned out good for you! If you’re on Instagram be sure to tag @gatherforbread.

I just made these and they are AMAZING. I rolled them a little bigger and baked them for no more than 9 minutes and they’re soooooooo chewy inside. I just used regular cocoa because that’s what I had but they’re still amazing. I wish I could get a picture in the comments of how pretty they look in the tin we’ll give away.
Thank you for this recipe, I used to eat BOXES of Archway Dutch Cocoa cookies as a kid!
Melanie says
Awesome! So glad they turned out well for you. They’re definitely one of my fav childhood cookies (so, of course, I still love them!)

Have a great day and thanks for being here!

Sure. The cookies probably won’t look as dark. You may not notice any difference in taste. Enjoy!

I made these cookies hoping they’d be like the Archway ones. I haven’t had an Archway dutch cocoa cookie in years, so I cannot attest to whether they are copy-cat or not, but regardless, they are delicious and are now a permanent fixture of my cookie repertoire. I followed the recipe and they came out nice and dark and soft and fantastic! Thank you for sharing your recipe with my family. They can’t believe a guy like me could make such wonderful cookies. Thanks.
Kat says
OMG I just made these and they are soooooo good!
Do you think it would be ok to freeze some of the dough after rolling it into balls to bake later?
Haley says
Mine didn’t come out flat. Is there something I did wrong?
Melanie says
Mine always turned out pretty flat. Not sure what could have gone wrong!
Stacey says
This were better than archway! We made these for Christmas and everyone loved them. Thanks for the great recipe!
Kirsten Stevenson says
I made these cookies today, and they are amazing! Thank you for sharing the recipe!
GingerBeachy says
Fabulous cookies! Archway Dutch Chocolate cookies were one of my favorites growing up. Since I’ve cleaned up my food habits I’ve refused to buy them. Thank you for a wonderfully perfect copycat recipe!
Mine did not come out thin/flat but perhaps I let them chill too long.
Diane says
I used this recipe and made a few changes. Since I always try to reduce fat in a recipe, I used only half the butter, (vegan butter), changed two eggs to two eggs and one egg yolk and added about a 1/4 applesauce. They came out spectacular. They were still chewy and tasty. I really like this recipe and will use it over and over I’m sure. Thanks!
Melanie says
Great to know Diane. THanks for the substitutes that worked well for you. Have a blessed day!
Stephen Esposito says
These were delicious, thanks for the awesome recipe.
Melanie says
THank you Stephen! Glad you enjoyed them.
Andrea says
These cookies are delicious! My family is both gluten and dairy free so I used Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 gluten free flour and Earth Balance dairy free baking sticks. They were completely wonderful! Big hit! Thank you so much!
Melanie says
Wow Andrea. Thanks for the positive review and extra feedback for gluten free restrictions. My family loves these cookies too!
