This recipe is just meant to be. Ever since I can remember stuffing has been my favorite dish on the holiday table. By now you probably have gathered that I’m a big bread fan, so I guess it makes complete sense for stuffing to be my favorite.
And homemade is the way to go! There’s something so special about eating your momma’s stuffing. Here am I 30+ years later and I still love it.
So I talked to that dear momma of mine and asked for any special tips she could share on this delicious stuffing recipe.
My mom always cut her bread ahead of time. She would cut it up and place it a bowl covered with a towel until she needed to finish the recipe. Traditionally she would look for uncut loaves of bread. But I know many of us like to save time. So go ahead and grab those bread cubes from the bakery or store.

But no pressure, I too succumb to the wonderfulness of packaged bread cubes when the time is tight. Do what makes you happy. No judgment here.
For Mom’s Traditional Bread Stuffing, you’ll want just a few staple ingredients. A good bread, good seasonings (get the good stuff here!), REAL butter, celery, onion and some chicken broth.
Need to save some time?
- Cut the celery and onion the night before and refrigerate.
- If you’re using a traditional loaf, cut the bread ahead of time and put back into the bread bag or place in a large bowl and cover.
- While you’re cooking the onion and celery, save time by prepping another recipe setting the table.

Mom's Traditional Bread Stuffing
- 1 1/2 cups chopped celery (about 3 stalks)
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 7 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon ground sage
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 12 cups dried bread cubes
- 1 cup chicken broth
- In a large skillet melt butter. Cook celery and onion until translucent and tender. Remove from heat.
- Place the bread cubes in a large bowl. Sprinkle with sage, rosemary, thyme, salt and pepper. Pour butter mixture over the bread cubes. Drizzle with chicken broth. Toss to combine and moisten.
- Preheat oven to 325°.
- Bake in a covered casserole dish for 30-45 minutes or until heated through. Or stuff into the cavity of a turkey.
