Slow Cooker Clam Chowder – New England clam chowder crockpot recipe. Seafood fans will love this easy creamy homemade soup. Top with bacon for a perfect meal. Comfort food for those chilly days. Serve with bread and salad for a full meal.
I’m thrilled to share this slow cooker clam chowder with you today. My family loves seafood. Especially when we’re at the beach. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen near as often as we’d like since we live 8 hours from our favorite beach. What we can rely on year round though is comfort foods like this that make us dream that we’re at the beach. See this is how it works. Serve soup surrounded by seashells and such. Look at favorite memory photos of the beach.
Then have everyone close their eyes and pretend that their feet are in the sand, the sun is shining down and the waves are crashing in the background.
OK. I’m killing myself here. It’s going to be another 6 months before our family beach trip. What am I doing to myself?! Stop. Back to slow cooker clam chowder. This soup is both delicious and easy. It comes together quickly. Heats up in the slow cooker while you go about your day. When you come back all you have to do is thicken it a bit on the stove for a few minutes. If you’re a seafood fan give this soup a try. You won’t regret it a single moment.
Thanks friends!

P.S. Here’s my favorite slow cooker. I’ve had it for over 5 years and it’s still going strong!
Slow Cooker Clam Chowder
Ingredients
- 1 onion diced
- 3 russet potatoes about 1 1/2 lbs peeled, diced
- 3 cans chopped clams 6.5 ounces each
- 8 ounces clam juice
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/4 teaspoon salt or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper or to taste
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup half and half
- 1 cup whole or 2% milk
- 2 bacon slices chopped
- Oyster or saltine crackers as needed
Instructions
- In the pot of a slow cooker, add diced onions and potatoes.
- Add 2 full cans of clams with juice and 1 can without clam juice. Discard remaining juice or save for another purpose.
- Add 1 bottle clam juice, thyme, salt and pepper to the slow cooker. Stir together.
- Cover pot and cook on high for 4 hours.
After the 4 hours:
- In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, melt butter. Add in flour. Stir; mixture will be thick. Slowly add milk and the half and half. Stir and continue to cook over medium heat until thickened.
- Add mixture to slow cooker. Stir and cook on low for another 30 minutes.
- Ladle into bowls. Top with bacon. Serve with oyster or saltine crackers.

It’s my very first time making clam chowder, and I’m excited!!! How many ounces on the can of claims? Also how thick does the milk mixture need get before adding it to the slow cooker?
Melanie says
I’m quite excited for you Alicia! We love clam chowder in our house.
Great question! The clam cans are 6.5 ounces each.
The flour in addition to the butter and milk will thicken the broth. Just be sure to add the milk very slowly while continuously stirring. Just give it a little bit of time, about 5-7 minutes and stir often.
Good luck! Can’t wait to hear how it turns out. 🙂
BECKY says
Is that one 8 ounce bottle of clam juice or 18 ounces of clam juice?
Melanie says
8 ounces of clam juice. Sorry. That was hard to read with the numbers being so close together. Hopefully, it reads more clearly now. Enjoy the soup Becky!
Abbi says
While the mixture is cooking the in crockpot, is it very soupy? Mine has a lot of liquid from the clams. Other than that it smells great!
Ray says
Can I put this in before I go to work on low for about 9hrs? Or is 4hrs the Max?
Melanie says
I’ve never tried it that long. You may find the potatoes to be really soft. But if you cook it on low, it may work ok. Let us know how it goes, Ray! Can’t wait to hear!

What a great use of the slow cooker!
Jen says
Can we substitute with non dairy?
Melanie says
You’d have to give it a try to know. I’ve never tried a nondairy option in this recipe. Good luck whatever you decide!

I’m new to cooking and tried this the other day and it was GREAT! Only question I have is, when melting the butter and adding the flour, is it supposed to get clumpy? Will it become smooth once I mix it with the half and half/milk for long enough?
Melanie says
I hope it worked out for you Carrie! Usually it’ll be clumpy at first but should smooth out after adding the liquid and stirring.

I love Clam chowder – just not with the clams because I find those rubbery and don’t really like them. So I leave them out of my calm chowder and just use clam juice. Thanks for sharing this recipe for the crock pot. It was terrific.
