Friends,
What does commitment mean to you? To me, it means sticking with it. It means not giving up even if it gets tough. It means doing that thing regardless of the reasons that tell you not to.
A year ago I committed to reading the bible in a year. Not an audacious goal but one I know I’m capable of completing. I stuck with it for the whole year. Yesterday I completed my bible in a year plan. It was such an awesome feeling to complete something I set out to do.
So many times in life I’ve committed to something and then quit. I quit because I didn’t feel like it. Or I quit because it was just too hard. Or I quit because I didn’t have my mind completely focused on bringing it full circle.
This just made me start thinking about commitment and what it really means.
Commitment is courage to change.
Commitment speaks ‘YES’ over and over. There is no room for ‘NO’.
Commitment is loyalty.
Commitment is reliability.
Commitment is devotedness.
Commitment is not quitting when it’s getting boring, challenging or discouraging.
I evaluated what I am committed to:
I am committed to my husband. I chose him and devoted myself to him. I am committed to our marriage and our friendship.
I am committed to my children. God entrusted their care to me as a mother. It is my duty to care, nurture and teach to the best of my ability.
I am committed to my health. I work out and eat healthily so I can enjoy the life I was blessed with.
But more than any other….
I am committed to God. To my faith in the Creator. I do that by prayer, worship, and obedience.
I am committed to knowing Him more today than I did yesterday. I do that by reading His word.
I am committed to reaching out more today than I did yesterday. I do that by serving and helping.
I am committed to change. I don’t want to remain who I am. I want to keep growing.
Don’t look for me 10 years from now and expect the same gal. Dear God, I hope I’ve grown in love, in joy and am even more committed to the Father.
Commitment does not equal success to me. But it does equal promise. A promise to myself to change and challenge myself.
And a promise from God: Psalm 37:5-6 NLT Commit everything you do to the Lord.Trust him, and he will help you. He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun.
Thank you, God for your promise. If we trust you, you will help.
What are you committed to TODAY? Do you feel your priorities are in the right place?

Great article, Melanie! I really need that reminder so many days! I am a commitment-phobic person. I don’t understand myself at all in this respect. If I promise my kids that we’ll go to the park this afternoon, when the time comes, I feel panicky and don’t want to go. When I commit to dieting, I do well for a while, and then I start to feel trapped by it, and I binge. Thanks for a new perspective on commitment. I hope that my view of commitment will resemble yours in the very near future!
Thanks for stopping by Christina! I do hope to inspire. It absolutely can be difficult to commit to things. And I am by no means great at it. But if I just stick to a small list of things to commit to it seems much easier. If anything pops up, I can ask myself is this something that should be a priority and should I commit to it. I pray all goes well for you and you can stick with it.
