My favorite cooked breakfast always includes french toast. As a grown woman it always has. When I was child it probably was more like cocoa puffs.
If we go out for breakfast and there’s no french toast I have no idea what to order! Seriously, come on people! No french toast on the menu? How dare you?
I used to make it with just boring old white bread. But lately I’ve gotten much more adventurous using whatever breads I have on hand.
I love to bake bread so I just go the freezer and pick one out. You can use almost any bread, white, french, italian, ciabatta, challah, etc.
I paired this with strawberry syrup. Why? Well because it’s delicious. That’s why. Oh and way healthier than that crap that they call syrup at the store!
Which by the way still has presence in our house. My husband just can’t seem to give it up. But who picks Aunt Jemima syrup over my fresh strawberry syrup? My husband. I take no offense. We all have our issues. 🙂
Blessings and love sent your way!
Melanie
Gather your ingredients.
In a 3qt rectangle dish combine milk, eggs, cinnamon and vanilla.
Whisk until combined. Set aside.
Preheat griddle over medium heat.
Take bread and cut into slices. Set aside.
In a small saucepan combine maple syrup, butter and crushed strawberries.
You can be smarter than me and crush the strawberries before adding them to the saucepan. Much smarter than me. Score for you. Why did I forget to crush the strawberries?
Oh yeah, that whole…don’t forget to take pictures of every step for your lovely readers. Sometimes when I’m that intentional I forget to do the smart thing. See how much you learn from others mistakes?
Cook over medium-low heat. Don’t forget those strawberries should be crushed. A potato masher works great!
Cook about 5 minutes or until sauce becomes bubbly and strawberries begin to break down and soften. Keep warm.
Place sliced bread in egg mixture. Let it soak for 2 minutes. Flip. Repeat soak.
Throw a tablespoon or so of butter on griddle to avoid bread sticking.
Arrange bread on griddle.
Cook the french bread over medium heat and flip the slices when they are browned to your liking.
Top with strawberry syrup and enjoy!
