There’s this great person in my life. One who I want to spend time with. One who I want to do fun things with. One I want to laugh with. One I want to talk to. One I want to have deep conversation with. One I want to do projects with. One I want to dine with.
One I want to stroll the neighborhood with. One I want to parent with. One I’d love to exercise with. One I want to make dinner with. One I want to go to the explore with.
This one is human as I am. This one can’t possibly be everything that I as a woman want or think I need.
My expectations are too high. My desires too deep.
Only ONE can comfort my sadness. Only ONE can fill me to overflowing. Only ONE can make me deep down satisfied.
So I turn to the ONE and ONLY. I seek the ONE. I ask the ONE.
Will you be all? All that is too much for the other one? The one I love so dearly. Yet, he can’t be all that I need him to be.
Oswald Chambers in My Utmost for His Highest writes: “There is only one Being Who can satisfy the last aching abyss of the human heart, and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. Why our Lord is apparently so severe regarding every human relationship is because He knows that every relationship not based on loyalty to Himself will end disaster….If our trust is placed in human beings, we shall end in despairing of everyone.”
Jesus, lower my expectations for the one. Allow me to be satisfied with him as he is. You designed him. You created him. You knew I’d marry him.
When he’s tired help me to feel energized by you. When he needs to be alone I want to be with you. When he doesn’t want to talk may I begin conversation with you. When he’s irritable may I be happy to abide in you.
Jesus Christ, may I turn to you in my frustration. In my deepest distress. In my joy. In my pain. In my discontentment. In my love.
You are my love. My ONE true love. May there be no other who could ever take your place in my heart.
There can only be ONE.
Who is your one and only?
