Dark Chocolate Mocha -Dark chocolate mocha with an easy recipe. Hot creamy mocha, this tutorial shows you how to get great flavor and a DIY drink from your own coffee machine. Cozy up, sip and enjoy!
Who is in love with coffee? Me! This mocha came from my desire to quench my thirst for a good mocha without paying the steep price tag that comes along with it. Those $4 – $5 drinks are not easy on the wallet. Huh? They sure are delicious though but I but can’t see paying that much for a drink on a regular basis.
But as a huge chocolate fan, I just can’t resist every now and then.
I treat myself about once a week but it’s almost always with a coupon or whatever other deal I can come up with. And when deals are scarce and you’re craving a good drink what does a girl do?
She makes her own creation at home. That’s what she does. This was incredibly good and I’m so glad I have this easy recipe in my file. Because maybe I’ll even trade in a few of my treats for many more at home. And you know what’s special about the ones at home?
They’re handcrafted and you get to enjoy them with the ones you love by your side. I don’t know about you but I’d much rather be sipping this with my man right by my side. Instead of sipping it as I run errands.
So here’s your challenge: Make this and share with a family member. It will be doubly sweet.

Dark Chocolate Mocha
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons ground coffee
- 1 cup milk I used 2%
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons dark cocoa powder I use Hershey's special dark
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 tablespoons whipped cream
Instructions
- Brew coffee in coffee maker as you typically would, making 2 - 8 ounce cups of coffee.
- Meanwhile, whisk together milk, sugar, dark cocoa and vanilla in a small saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat for about 5-7 minutes whisking occasionally. Keep watch not to burn it. Don't let it come to a boil.
- Pour this chocolate mixture into 2 coffee mugs. Divide brewed coffee between both mugs. Stir.
- Top with whipped cream. Dust with additional cocoa, if desired. Sip & enjoy!

This dark chocolate mocha is just calling my name, Melanie! I love how rich and decadent this looks! I’m definitely trying this in place of my regular ‘ole coffee this weekend. Pinned!

Oh this just sounds so good! Perfect for fall. And I agree, gourmet coffee drinks are pricey! Especially since whenever I get one, I usually get a little baked good to go with it. Easily $7 out the door. This version will come with a lot less guilt. My wallet (and husband) thank you!

Wow, that looks so chocolatey and decadent. I love it! I love those coffee shop drinks too, but the prices are ridiculous. So nice to get the same drink (or better!) at home!

I’m a coffee fan, too, but coffee shops can sure break the bank. Love this version. Plus, I can add as much whipped cream as I want. 🙂

I am definitely a coffee addict, but I agree 5$ for a cup of joe is a little ridiculous! Besides, why pay that when I can have THIS? LOVE this dark chocolate mocha, my dear! This is how every morning should be started! Cheers and thanks for sharing the YUM!

This is delicious! I was looking for more of my International coffee, in decaf sugar free, and having trouble finding it. THEN I read the label on the one I have that’s almost empty, and yuk! I bought some good quality decaf instant coffee, and made your recipe with it. OMG, so easy, so great! I love my vanilla bean paste, and King Arthur Flour’s Double Dutch dark cocoa. I think this is divine, and I will even try stirring in some protein powder, and making it a chilled shake sometime. THANK YOU! Great recipe!
Sheila says
I am wondering if the cocoa powder is unsweetened baking cocoa. Thanks!
Melanie says
Yes! Enjoy the mocha. 🙂
Amanda says
This is a really good recipe; but it’s actually really good too if you just add 1 tbsp of organic turbinado sugar and then you can also skip the vanilla extract. I made an iced version and it’s very smooth and delicious going down without all the added sugar.
Melanie says
Thanks for the tips Amanda. Glad you enjoyed it!
Karly says
Wow. This could be an everyday thing for me… looks SO good! Perfect for those frigid, awful winter days.
Melanie says
Thanks, Karly! It’s absolutely perfect for cold weather.
